Beach Hut Ideas Celebrate October
October Beach Hut Ideas
Autumn Wellbeing, Halloween & Seaside Adventures!
October at a beach hut is rather special. Summer crowds have disappeared. The promenade is quieter. The sea becomes more dramatic, the sunsets seem richer and suddenly that little wooden hut feels less like a summer base and more like your own private coastal retreat. So, before you even contemplate packing everything away for winter, there are two very good reasons to open those doors again this October.
This month we’re celebrating World Mental Health Day on 10 October and Halloween on 31 October. Two completely different occasions – one beach hut – yet plenty of possibilities.
World Mental Health Day by the Sea – 10 October 2026
World Mental Health Day is observed internationally on 10 October and provides an opportunity to talk about mental wellbeing, connection and looking after ourselves and each other. And sometimes looking after ourselves doesn’t need to be complicated.
It can be a walk, a conversation, a cup of tea. Or even an hour spent watching the sea.
Why Celebrate at Your Beach Hut?
A beach hut creates something increasingly precious – permission to stop. There’s no television demanding attention. Household jobs aren’t staring accusingly from the corner. You don’t need to achieve very much at all. Invite a friend down for a walk and a coffee. Leave the phones in the hut, on silent. Walk along the shoreline. Talk if you want to talk. Stay quiet if you don’t. Sometimes companionship works perfectly well without an agenda.
Create a Beach Hut Walk & Talk
Why not make October the month you start a simple tradition? Invite friends, neighbours or family members for a Beach Hut Walk & Talk. Meet at the hut. Walk along the promenade or shoreline for 30 to 60 minutes. Return for something warm to eat and drink. No need for fitness targets, step-count competition, nor Lycra. Just movement, fresh air and conversation. It could even become a regular winter ritual.
The Autumn Wellbeing Picnic
October calls for warming food rather than cucumber sandwiches. So pack:
- Homemade tomato or butternut squash soup in flasks
- Warm sausage rolls
- Cheese and caramelised onion tart
- Crusty bread with Sussex cheeses
- Apple and walnut salad
- Homemade flapjacks (I love them made with ginger!)
- Apple cake or blackberry crumble pots
Try something warming to drink like hot chocolate, fresh coffee, spiced apple juice, Chai, or ginger and lemon tea. And perhaps a small bottle of English sparkling wine if you’re celebrating something. Because feeling good doesn’t have to be too complicated.
Books for a Slower Autumn Afternoon
A good beach hut book should make you forget to check your phone. Do you have any favourites you can recommend, non-fiction, or fiction? Keep a couple of books permanently inside the hut and encourage visitors to swap one when they’ve finished. Before long, you’ll have your own tiny seaside library.
Make the Day Extra Special
Try a One-Hour Switch-Off. Phones go into a basket inside the hut. And for one hour, walk, talk, read, watch the sea, drink coffee – in other words, do absolutely nothing.
The world will almost certainly manage without you.
Halloween at Your Beach Hut – 31 October 2026
If ever there was an opportunity to have some slightly ridiculous fun at your beach hut, Halloween is it. By late October, darkness arrives earlier, the wind whistles along the promenade and the sea can provide a suitably theatrical soundtrack. Add pumpkins, lanterns and a few willing children or grandchildren and you’ve got yourself a Beach Hut Halloween.
Create a Haunted Beach Hut
You don’t need to transform the hut into a Hollywood film set. Keep it simple by decorating with mini pumpkins, battery-operated candles, paper bats, autumn leaves, orange bunting. What about a strategically positioned skeleton in a deckchair! Give your skeleton sunglasses and a mug of tea because even the undead appreciate beach-hut life!
Hold a Halloween Beach Treasure Hunt
Create clues around the hut and nearby beach. Children could search for the Witch’s pebble, a Mermaid’s shell, Dracula’s Driftwood, the Ghostly feather, a Pirate’s treasure. Then finish back at the hut with a small Halloween treat bag. For older children, turn it into a photography challenge and ask them to capture the spookiest photograph of the sea.
Halloween Beach Hut Picnic
October food can be comforting, colourful and fun. Try
- Pumpkin soup in flasks
- Mini hot dogs
- Sausage rolls
- Cheese straws
- Pumpkin-shaped sandwiches
- Toffee apples
- Ginger cake
- Chocolate brownies
- Homemade Halloween biscuits
Drinks for children:
- Hot chocolate with marshmallows
- Warm apple juice with cinnamon
- Blackcurrant cordial
Drinks for adults:
- Mulled apple punch
- Coffee
- Hot chocolate
- A warming flask of something suitably grown-up (for those not driving)
Halloween Story Telling by the Sea
As dusk arrives, gather everyone inside the hut and tell a story. Younger children might enjoy a gentle ghost story or seaside adventure. For adults, choose a classic mystery, a collection of British ghost stories or a novel set on a remote coastline. Better still, ask everyone to invent one paragraph of a story.
Start with: “Nobody had opened Beach Hut 666 since last October…” Then pass the story to the next person. By the time you reach the final guest, your innocent little beach hut may contain smugglers, ghosts, buried treasure and possibly a suspicious-looking estate agent.
Don’t Miss the October Sunset
Halloween doesn’t have to be all pumpkins and ghosts. Arrive earlier and enjoy the afternoon. Take a walk, collect autumn photographs, have supper then watch daylight disappear across the water.
October sunsets can be spectacular, particularly when clouds create those deep oranges, pinks and purples that summer skies don’t always deliver.
Why October is a Wonderful Month for Beach Hut Life
October reminds us of something we’ve been exploring throughout our Celebrate Your Beach Hut series.
A beach hut isn’t just for summer. In autumn it becomes something different. A meeting place. A walking base. A reading room. A picnic shelter. A place to watch storms safely from the promenade. A reason to get outside when staying at home suddenly seems much easier.
Along the Sussex coast, from Hove and Shoreham-by-Sea through Worthing and further west, autumn brings a quieter version of seaside life.
And quieter doesn’t mean less enjoyable. Sometimes it’s better.
Thinking About Owning a Beach Hut?
If you’ve always imagined beach-hut ownership as something involving bikinis, deckchairs and August sunshine, October might change your mind. Imagine having somewhere to head after a Sunday morning walk. Somewhere for coffee overlooking the sea, where your grandchildren associate with adventures, where you can meet friends without having to book a table. Not only that, it’s a place that gives you a reason to get outside throughout the year.
A beach hut may be small. but the lifestyle it creates certainly isn’t. It may be October, but don’t shut the door on the seaside yet. Summer may have finished, but beach-hut season hasn’t. Pull on a jumper, fill a couple of flasks and invite somebody you haven’t seen for a while.
And if it’s Halloween, put a skeleton in the deckchair. Because October by the sea is far too good to miss.
